Join us for an open rehearsal with Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber, along with L.A. Dance Project dancers, in creation for Resonance, a new work commissioned as part of PST ART: Art & Science Collide.

L.A. Dance Project’s Resonance, a series of new dances premiering as part of Getty PST ART: Art & Science Collide, bridges scientific research on empathy with choreographic practice and interdisciplinary dialogue to create dances, guide public talks, and mobilize social action.

Premiering on November 16, 2024, at Barnsdall Art Park, Resonance features a series of commissioned dance works by outstanding choreographers Bobbi Jene Smith, Or Schraiber, Francesca Harper, and Rauf Yasit, in dialogue with social neuroscientist Dr. Jamil Zaki and historian Dr. Vincent Brown.

Free of charge, each presentation of Resonance is in three parts: dance performance, public dialogue, and invitations for reflection and civic action.

Chosen for their bold interdisciplinary approach to movement and collaboration, 2024 LAUNCH:LA 4 artists Charissa Kroeger and Evan Sagadencky + Kevin Zambrano and Julia Eichten will be creating new work at LADP’s DTLA studio space for the month of October. Works created during the program will premiere on October 25th, 2024 as part of LADP Presents at 2245.

LAUNCH:LA is LADP’s residency program supporting Los Angeles-based emerging artists in the creation and presentation of new work. Each LAUNCH:LA artist receives three weeks of rehearsal space, monetary support, and production resources to create new dance-centered work that is presented to audiences in LADP’s theater at the culmination of the residency.

After its premiere at The Broad, choreographer Jobel Medina and multi-instrumentalist Elliott Sellers now expand IMMDED IMMGEWD into a 50-minute live performance, fusing unconventional percussion, cello, and visceral movement. The two artists engage in a dynamic and intimate dialogue using their bodies and musical instruments, exploring a range of possibilities in their relationship within the piece.

Jobel Medina (b. 1990 in Pasig City, Philippines) is a Los Angeles-based choreographer and dancer known for his distinct movement style that merges spectacle with experimental elements in both stage and film. Critics praise his work as “inventive and eye-catching, detailed and wide-ranging.”

Medina’s performances have been presented at prestigious venues such as The Broad, Institute of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, Museum of Contemporary Art, and REDCAT from 2022 to 2024. He currently performs in Dimitri Chamblas’s “Take Me Home” and Benjamin Millepied’s “Grace.” His notable collaborators include Kim Gordon, Alex Prager, Tino Sehgal, Simon McBurney, Christopher Bordenave, Shahar Binyamini, Tom Weinberger, Danielle Agami.

In addition to his performance work, Medina has appeared in commercial campaigns for brands like Calvin Klein, Lexus, OnStar, Adidas, White Claw, and ON. He also appeared in works alongside entertainers such as Zendaya, Anderson Paak, Perfume Genius, and Noah Cyrus.

Medina holds an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts and leads movement workshops at universities across the U.S., sharing his practices with the next generation of artists.

Elliott “L” Sellers is a director, producer, writer, cinematographer, editor, drummer and multi-instrumentalist based in Los Angeles. Sellers has released experimental albums like ‘Glasswerx’ with Chris ‘Mid-Air’ Harbach, made solely with sounds of glass. Ridley Scott hand selected “DREAMS” by Zhu+NERO as a part of Saatchi + Saatchi’s new directors showcase at Cannes Lions. Sellers has directed work for artists such as Raphael Saadiq, Broken Bells, John Legend, Terrace Martin, Simone Biles, Tame Impala, Willow Smith, Lil Miquela, Young Thug, Gunna, Lil baby, 2-Chains, Lil Jon, Offset, Zhu, Ty Dolla $ign, Nico Muhly, Yuna, Lil Wayne, and Portugal the Man.

L.A. Dance Project and The Wallis present Gatherings, a triple-bill program showcasing interdisciplinary collaborations in dance, music, and visual art. The evening features Triade, a signature repertory work from LADP Artistic Director Benjamin Millepied, created as a tribute to his mentor, the visionary choreographer and artist Jerome Robbins; Quartet for Five, a critically acclaimed work by 2022-2024 LADP Artists-in-Residence Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber; and Sleepwalker’s Encyclopedia, from choreographer and former New York City Ballet Principal Dancer Janie Taylor, with set design by American painter Benjamin Styer. The program opens with Anthem, a site-specific piece also by Janie Taylor featuring dancers from the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute at the Colburn School performing alongside LADP dancers.

Join us for a weeklong workshop with dancer, choreographer and director Bobbi Jene Smith. Running July 15-19th, the open level workshop will take place at 2245, L.A. Dance Project’s downtown studio and performance space, with daily sessions from 10 AM to 2 PM.

Daily Schedule:

11:30am – 2:00pm Repertory investigation, Improvisation, and conversation

This immersive experience includes a daily class followed by repertory and improvisational work. Offering participants a unique opportunity to explore movement and creativity under Smith.  Her work delves into themes of expression, freedom and the contradictions within us. Don’t miss this special time to dive into your own creative practice and physicality.

BOBBI JENE SMITH is a director, choreographer, and dancer who makes work for both live theater and film. Her work explores affect and apathy, domestic politics, and the rhythmic and formal connections between music and movement. She danced for the Batsheva Company from 2005-2014. Since then, she has choreographed original works for the Paris Opera Ballet, Theater Basel, Martha Graham Dance Company, L.A. Dance Project (LADP), VAIL Dance Festival, The Royal Danish Ballet, the Batsheva Dance Company, and others. Her dance and music theater works have been presented and supported by the American Repertory Theater, PS 122, La Mama, ODC Theater, Stanford Live, Carolina Performing Arts, Kaufman Hall at the 92Y, Luminato Festival, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art and others. Additionally, Smith has starred in or choreographed films including Elvira Lind’s Bobbi Jene, Georgia Parris’s Mari, and Alex Garland’s Annihilation. She has directed her own dance films, including Broken Theater and Gallop Apace. Smith is an alumnus of The Juilliard School, North Carolina School of the Arts, and Royal Winnipeg School. She is a founding member of the American Modern Opera Company (AMOC). In 2019, she was awarded The Harkness Promise Award and was The Martha Duffy Resident Artist at Baryshnikov Art Center. Smith is currently an Artist In Residence at LADP.

Choreographer Benjamin Millepied navigates cinema, dance, and theatre to reinterpret Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers as young adults in an urban environment, where social norms prevent them from living out their love story in this contemporary vision of Prokofiev’s masterpiece, Romeo & Juliet.

On stage and off, the plot unfolds using a unique projection system. Tableaux are broadcast in real-time from unexpected places inside the theatre and backstage. The dancers, filmed live, transition seamlessly from stage to screen.

Each performance features a different cast, showcasing diverse couples making this version of Romeo & Juliet a universal celebration of love. Benjamin Millepied presents the mythical tale through a modern and original prism, further enhanced by Prokofiev’s music.
