Quintett

Choreographer: William Forsythe
In collaboration with Dana Caspersen, Stephen Galloway, Jacopo Godani, Thomas McManus and Jone San Martin

Lyrical, committed and moving, Quintett is a quiet masterpiece set to Gavin Bryars’s “Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet.” On stage filled with bright, white light, Quintett brilliantly evokes and develops Bryars’s themes of loss, hope, fear and joy. In Quintett the dancers set into motion a seamless flow of duets, solos and trios in counterpoint to the heartbeat of Gavin Bryars’s music. Weaving and tumbling, the dancers create an eddying force that grows in fluid, joyous complexity—a torrent containing, in its bright, vital vision, an awareness of its own eventual end.

Reflections

Choreographer: Benjamin Millepied, In collaboration with Julia Eichten, Charlie Hodges, Morgan Lugo, Nathan Makolandra and Amanda Wells

Reflections is conceived as a true artistic collaboration, not only between choreographer Benjamin Millepied, composer David Lang and artist Barbara Kruger, but also between Millepied and the dancers of L.A. Dance Project.

Reflections premiered at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, France on May 23, 2013. It was commissioned by Van Cleef and Arpels as the first part of a Triptych entitled “Gems”, to be completed by two different artistic teams collaborating with Benjamin Millepied.

The stark essentiality of Kruger’s artwork captures the sensuality and ephemeral feelings of longing and desire, which runs through all of Millepied’s work. David Lang’s minimal score for piano solo is a unique selection from This was written by hand/memory pieces, carefully chosen by Millepied and Kruger during the collaborative workshop process in Los Angeles and performed by Andrew Zolinsky for Cantaloupe Records.

Sarabande

Choreographer: Benjamin Millepied

Created in 2009 on Millepied’s then pick-up troupe Danses Concertantes, Sarabande is set to music by Johann Sebastian Bach: excerpts from Partita for Solo Flute in A Minor and two of Bach’s six Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin. In this ballet for four male dancers, Millepied’s pervading lyricism and penchant for a fluid and, at times, near-improvisatory movement quality breathe dimension into these exemplary solos for flute and violin which are performed live on stage (whenever possible). The piece opens to the sounds of a bright, playful flute from which a solitary male dancer draws his impetus with poised exuberance. The mood then shifts to a more somber place during the second solo, which is succeeded by the arrival of the noble and virtuosic violin, and with it a courtly-yet-contemporary pas de trois that sets the tone for the various solo and ensemble sections that follow.

Second Quartet

Choreographer: Noé Soulier

Per choreographer Noé Soulier, the movements present in his Second Quartet are not immediately recognizable. Rather, they are motivated by concrete goals—such as avoiding, striking, throwing, pushing, and resisting—but impeded through the use of specific strategies. The targeted objects are not present, or body parts used during the movements are ill-suited for their goals. For example, a dancer may hit an imaginary object or attempt to push another dancer with his throat or rib cage. Without the spectator having to recognize the motivations behind these incomplete movements, they are intended to stimulate his or her own physical memory by appearing directed or defined by something that is invisible. This openness allows images, physical expectations, and other associations to inform the spectator’s perception of the movement itself.

They said:
There used to be a town

They said:
People used to talk with their bodies. Sounds made you remember.

They said:
Practice to feel.

They said:
The ground was soft, and so were they. Flowers grew over their faces.

The Betweens

Choreographer: Jermaine Spivey & Spenser Theberge in collaboration with the dancers.

This project began as an investigation of the possibilities for performance, in both body and site, during the Covid era. As our conversation around this deepened, the words “placement”, “replacement”, and “displacement” became increasingly present. There’s an inherent relationship between these words, and it’s liminal and ever-changing— slipping in and out of, adapting to, and accommodating different states of being. This liminality has been at the heart of our process, and it lead us to this central question: How do you maintain a sense of self when you’re constantly placed, replaced, and displaced? Through this process, we aim to explore, perform, and reframe this question as a representation of this never-ending reorientation of self and site.
